Sizing a generator correctly protects your equipment and your budget. A set that is too small trips under load, and a set that is too large wastes fuel and money. Our free power calculator helps you estimate the right capacity in kVA in about one minute, using the equipment you actually plan to run.
The power calculator works from a list of common loads such as LED lighting, fans, office equipment, refrigerators, split air conditioners, water pumps, motors and elevators. You enter the quantity of each item and the calculator adds the continuous load in kilowatts, estimates the starting load of motors and compressors, applies a power factor of 0.8 and adds a safety margin of 20 percent for standby duty or 30 percent for prime duty.
The result is an initial estimate, not an engineering design. Motors, pumps and air conditioners draw several times their running current at start-up, so the largest motor and the order in which loads start can change the final choice. A suitable generator may also need to handle harmonics or sensitive electronics.
